Beginners Guide to Building a Website

To build your new website, just complete the following steps:

1) Buy your Domain Name - A domain name is the name you want to give your website.  For example, if your site is about Widgets, you could call it Widget.com.  To get a domain, you usually have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. Getting a domain name does not get you a website......it just gets you a name.  The costs are minimal, usually $7 to $12 a year.   The most popular domain names end in .com.  The second most popular domains end in .org or .net.  To see if the domain name you want is available, go to one of the registrars below and do a search for your domain.  Once you find the name you want, go ahead and pay for the registration (before someone else buys your domain name).  Many companies offer specials......if you set up your web hosting with them, they will give you the domain for free.  You will want to set up your webhosting with the same company that you registered your domain with.

2) Pay for Web Hosting - A web hosting company is basically a company that has many computers connected to the internet.  When you place your web pages (your website) on their computers, everyone in the world will be able to connect to it and view them.  You will pay them a monthly fee of $5 to $15 for them to do this.  To make things easy, most people use the same company for their Domain Name purchase and their Web Hosting.

If you sign up for JustHost.com, it includes free domain, web hosting for $4.95, and free website building.  You can skip to Step #4.

After you sign up for a web hosting account, you will need to point your domain to that account on your web host.  For detailed instructions on doing that, Click here!

3) Design your web pages - the next step is to design the web site itself.

You have 3 Options to get your new website built.

 Option #1

1) Use a Free Website Builder - If you get your domain and hosting from Just Host $4.95/month, they have a free website builder program.  You simply pick out your favorite design template, put in your business information to customize it, and it will automatically build your website.  This is by far the easiest and cheapest way to go.  It is very easy for a beginner and it has a very professional look.  This is the option that most new businesses use to build their website.

 Option #2

2) Build a Website yourself - This is for the person that wants a custom one of a kind website.  If you plan on doing a lot of different things with your website, you will need to use this option.  There is a learning curve if you have never built your own website before, so allow yourself some time to learn how to do it.  One way is to use a WYSIWYG ("What You See Is What You Get") web editor to do it. Such editors allow you to design your site visually, without having to mess around with the technical details. They work just like a regular word processor.

There are many commercial web editors. The most popular and one of the most highly-regarded WYSIWYG web editors is Dreamweaver.  Dreamweaver is what the majority of website builders use.  It has everything you need to grow your website to be a powerhouse on the Internet.  Click Here to Download Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 directly.

Everyone can learn to use Dreamweaver.......even if you don't have any previous computer skills.  It will look a little overwhelming at first, but it just takes some time.  Go through all of the free tutorials and pay close attention.  Then play around with the features, and practice.  Before you know it, it will become very familiar.  Learning how to use Dreamweaver will pay off big in the future.  You wont have to rely on anyone else to make changes to your website.

 Option #3

3) Pay someone else to build your website - This is the most expensive option.  This is for the person that wants a highly customized website with lots of bells and whistles but doesn't want to do any of the work themselves.  If you need someone else to build a website for you, I highly recommend CrowdSpring.  The quality of their website design will blow you away.  They can also design your logo and brochures.  To see the quality of their work, click here: Need a website? Try crowdSPRING!

4) Getting your Website noticed - When your site is ready, you will need to submit your site to the search engines, particularly Google. You can find the Google submission page by clicking on the "About Google" link on Google, and then locating the "Submit your content to Google" link on the page that appears. However, submitting your site to Google alone is really pointless. If there are no other links to your site on the web, Google will be appear most reluctant to index your site and show results that include your pages. If there are many other links to your site, you don't even have to bother to submit it to Google - it will find your site by itself.

5) How to Make Money on your Website - There are many different business models that people are using to make a profit from their websites.  To see a detailed list of the different ways you can make money with your website, Click Here.
